SAFETY and DANGERDriving would be more difficult and more dangerous without our properly-adjusted rear vision mirrors. While driving, we use the broad view through the windscreen as we move ahead, but we also use the rear view mirrors for reference, making quick, periodic glances into them for information to aid us in driving decisions. Reversing or changing lanes would be hazardous without them.

“I KNOW MY OWN” – What is my response?

I know My ownnesting guillemots 1The guillemot is the common name for several species of seabird in the auk family. The small arctic seabird lives on the rocky cliffs of northern coastal regions, breeding on narrow cliff ledges in dense colonies that vary in size from some hundred pairs to hundreds of thousands of pairs.

nesting guillemotsBecause of the crowded conditions, hundreds of females lay their pear shaped eggs side by side on a narrow ledge, in long rows. The eggs all look alike, and yet the mother bird can identify her own eggs. Studies show that even when the eggs are moved, the mother knows her egg so well, that she will find it and return it to its original location.

I MUST LOSE IN ORDER TO GAIN?

Lose to gainSADHU SUNDAR SINGH and a companion were travelling through a pass in the Himalayas when they came across a body lying in the snow. They found he was barely alive. Singh wanted to stop and help the man but his companion refused, saying they would lose their own lives if they burdened themselves with him. Sundar Singh could not leave the man to die, so he bade his companion farewell.

After doing what he could for the stranger, Singh lifted the man onto his back to carry him. With great exertion, he pushed forward.

THIS MASSIVE BRIDGE started from a kite string

Niagara bridge 1Nearly 170 years ago, the mighty Niagara Falls, previously known only to the local Native Americans, was becoming the new tourism Mecca, but the only way to cross the imposing gorge was to go upstream and take a turbulent ride in a small ferry. A bridge spanning the gorge was envisioned to provide a highway over the gorge and allow commerce and people to pass more freely between Canada and the United States.

The Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge Company in Canada, and the International Bridge Company in USA were given the charter to build a bridge but leading engineers of Europe and North America quickly advised it could not be done.

WOULD YOUR ANSWER BE THE SAME?

which worldWilliam Kelly (1821-1906) was an outstanding student of the Bible whose scholarship and spirituality made him a real power for God in Great Britain at the close of the 1800s. His library contained 15,000 books and he had detailed knowledge of each. Kelly was a prolific author and the titles of his own writings fill nearly ten pages in the British Museum catalogue.

John Sung’s father was pastor of the local Church in China, and young John helped in the ministry and even preached. He was called “Little Pastor” by the people.

BEATEN because she couldn’t see the goal

beaten by lack of visionThe California coast was shrouded in fog the morning of 4th July 1952. Twenty one miles to the west, on Catalina Island, a 34 year old woman waded into the water and began swimming toward California, determined to be the first woman ever to swim the strait. Chadwick 1

She was Florence Chadwick.

She had already set the world record for swimming the English Channel in 13 hours 20 minutes, and was the first woman to swim it in both directions.

THREATENED BY A RAT – it could have changed the war!

rat in planeSir Frederick Handley Page, CBE, FRAeS (1885 – 1962) was an English industrialist who was a pioneer in the aircraft industry and was known as the father of the heavy bomber. He was best known for large aircraft such as the Handley Page 0/400 and Halifax bombers and the H.P.42 airliner. He was knighted in 1942 for his contribution to the war effort.

A young Handley Page once landed his plane in an isolated area during his travels, and unbeknown to him a rat got aboard the plane during his stay.

Sweet or sourA farmer invited a friend into his apple orchard to taste the fruit and make some fresh apple cider. But the friend gently refused. After he also refused another invitation, the farmer said, “I guess you must be prejudiced against my apples”
